Day of the dead

In today's practical lesson we were given the chance to go off topic and play with Halloween make up! This was so much fun- I have always loved sugar skulls but never had a go at them myself. I paired up with Hana and we both wanted to use the full 2 hours to create a look, rather than doing a basic design in 40 mins. We found a small studio to work in after our class.

I didn't have a particular design in mind so I just picked a colour scheme and went with it! I really enjoyed doing it this way as it was challenging and allowed me to be very creative, however, I found that I take much longer to create a design when I make it up as I go along.

I used the illamasqua skin base and then used purple eyeshadow to do a strong contour. I then outlined the socket with a lilac shade and filled the circles with the same colours. I wanted a sort of ombre effect and wanted to create depth so I added darker shades of purple and blue around the edge and then blended it in. I then outlined the sockets with black supra colour and blended it in towards the eye, adding to the depth. I then used the black again to draw on the petals. It was so hard to get these all detailed and even!

I finished off by adding details to the forehead, nose and mouth. I LOVED this lesson and although its hard work, I actually really enjoy doing more intricate and detailed designs.

 Health and safety:

  • Before I do anything, I make sure that my brushes have been sufficiently cleaned with  Isopropyl alcohol to prevent bacteria spreading.
  • I covered my work station with couch roll to ensure that I had a clean space to put all my products and tools onto.
  •   I covered my model with a gown so that no product would fall  onto her clothing.
  •   Before starting the makeup I asked my model if she had any skin diseases or medical conditions that i should be aware of. I also asked if she was wearing contact lenses, as some products will irritate them.
  •  I washed my hands with soap and water to prevent bacteria transferring.
  • I decanted any product onto the back of my clean hand, to prevent double dipping and again preventing any bacteria from the models face being transferred into my make up.
