Contouring

In today's lesson we leanrt how to contour correctly. We began by colour matching and then applying foundation to clean skin. I found this part really challenging today as I was working with Erin who is very fair but has lots of beautiful freckles, so I had to find a balance as I didn't want to hide her freckles with a very pale base, but I didn't want to go too warm either. In the end I was very happy with my colour match!

Once this was done, we watched a demo and then came back and began by mixing up concealers and foundations to make the perfect highlight shade for the person we were working on. I then applied this to the areas that 'stuck out'- the nose, cheekbones and centre of forehead. I learnt how important it was to really get to know the face and find where all the important bones are before going in and highlighting. Once I was happy with the highlight, I took one of the more grey toned concealers and used it to gradually contour the face, applying very small amounts and blending with my fingers. I did this in the hollow of the cheeks, down the nose and on the temples. I then lightly went over this with some bronzer to make it softer and to warm up the face. Then to finish off I gently pressed the translucent powder onto the face.

I was pleased with the end result as this is a skintone I have never worked on before!

 Health and safety:

  • Before I do anything, I make sure that my brushes have been sufficiently cleaned with  Isopropyl alcohol to prevent bacteria spreading.
  • I covered my work station with couch roll to ensure that I had a clean space to put all my products and tools onto.
  •   I covered my model with a gown so that no product would fall  onto her clothing.
  •   Before starting the makeup I asked my model if she had any skin diseases or medical conditions that i should be aware of. I also asked if she was wearing contact lenses, as some products will irritate them.
  •  I washed my hands with soap and water to prevent bacteria transferring.
  • I decanted any product onto the back of my clean hand, to prevent double dipping and again preventing any bacteria from the models face being transferred into my make up.
