Elizabethan make up (make up lesson)

In this lesson we had to do a simple Elizabethan make up look. We did the classic pale base, white eyebrows and eyelashes, pink blush on cheeks and a lipstain on the lips. I was very lucky to be partnered with Erin for this, as she actually really suited the make up!! She looked very Elizabethan with her fair skin and red hair. I was really pleased with how this turned out, it was very simple yet very effective.

Step by step:

  • Cleanse, tone and moisturise the face.
  • Apply satin skin base with foundation brush.
  • Apply skin base 001 with foundation brush.
  • Take a small brush and some skin base to cover the smaller, tricky areas around the eyes and nose.
  • Put white supra colour onto the back of your hand, and then cover a disposable mascara wand with the supracolour.
  • Without touching the skin underneath, run the covered mascara wand through the eyebrows.
  • Take some more supra colour and a new mascara wand. Ask the model to look down and very carefully coat the lashes. To completely coat the lashes, ask the model to look down and brush the lashes down while twirling the wand. This enables you to transfer all of the product from the wand to the lashes. Ask your model to look up and use the same twirling technique. Repeat until you have the coverage you want.
  • Ask you model to look up again and gently coat the bottom lashes.
  • Scrape off some pink blush and decant onto the clean lid of the blush palette.
  • Dab the brush into this blush and then tap it on the back of your hand to ensure that you dont put too much on at once. This way, you are in control and you can build it up slowly.
  • Make sure that you literally just dab it onto the apples of the cheek, do not drag it up the cheek bone like you would do for modern blush. You are trying to give the llillusion of flushed cheeks, like the elizabethans were.
  • Using a flat, square brush, apply a mixture of red and pink from the lip palette. Ask the model to rub their lips together, then assess to see if you need to apply anymore. We were going for more of a stained lip look, so perfect shape isn't too important.
  • Use a powder puff and loose powder to set the make up.

This make up is very similar to what Cate Blanchett wore in the role of Elizabeth:

 Health and safety:

  • Before I do anything, I make sure that my brushes have been sufficiently cleaned with  Isopropyl alcohol to prevent bacteria spreading.
  • I covered my work station with couch roll to ensure that I had a clean space to put all my products and tools onto.
  •   I covered my model with a gown so that no product would fall  onto her clothing.
  •   Before starting the makeup I asked my model if she had any skin diseases or medical conditions that i should be aware of. I also asked if she was wearing contact lenses, as some products will irritate them.
  •  I washed my hands with soap and water to prevent bacteria transferring.
  • I decanted any product onto the back of my clean hand, to prevent double dipping and again preventing any bacteria from the models face being transferred into my make up.
